Visual Studio Team Services Error in AX 2012 (TF204017)

Recently I ran into an issue with my AX 2012 workspace that is connected to Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS, VSO, Online TFS). When I opened AX an infolog appeared containing the following error message:

C:\AxRepository\AX
Team foundation server error
TF204017: The operation cannot be completed because the user (Volker Deuss) does not have one or more required permissions (Use) for workspace AXILITYR3CU9_AXWORKSPACE0;Volker Deuss.
TF204017: The operation cannot be completed because the user (Volker Deuss) does not have one or more required permissions (Use) for workspace AXILITYR3CU9_AXWORKSPACE0;Volker Deuss.
Synchronization failed.

In this case the error message is kind of misleading because I’ve set up that workspace freshly using a Microsoft Account with my name. From experience I know that those permission problems relate to either changed (missing) permissions¬†for folders / files of the repository or saved credentials. In my case only credentials came into question and in addition to that this was likely because I own and use different Microsoft Accounts (carrying the same name). So the source of the issue was that I logged in before with a different account and the login data was stored on the machine.

Credential Manager

Credential ManagerIf you use Team Foundation Server as version control system you identify yourself with a domain account. The saved credentials can be viewed (and deleted to fix the according issue) via Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager. This was the first place I looked into and was surprised to find no saved credentials at all! Nonetheless this is the place you want to go if you are working with TFS or have any issues that relate to stored credentials of domain accounts.

Browsing History

Internet Explorer Delete Browsing HistoryEdge Delete Browsing HistoryThe solution in case of VSTS was to delete the browsing history and passwords from Internet options. You can open the dialog via the settings button in Internet Explorer or directly from the start menu of Windows. In Edge you need to use the More button (which is the three dots in the right upper corner), then Settings and the button Choose what to clear. In both cases you have to select Passwords additionally. After deletion and restart of AX you are asked for your credentials and everything is fine again!
